  • Outlines efforts to build an inclusive and diverse workforce, as well as Boeing’s community engagement and charity partnerships in the UK and Ireland

London,  10 October 2023  - Boeing [NYSE: BA] has released a new Spotlight highlighting the company’s efforts in environmental, social and governance (ESG) related topics throughout 2022 to accelerate sustainable aviation in the UK and Ireland.

Following the publication of Boeing’s 2023 Sustainability Report earlier this year, outlining the company’s global efforts to advance environmental stewardship and inclusion, the UK and Ireland Spotlight hones in on progress made in the UK and Ireland.

The accomplishments are featured under four key sections in the spotlight: People, Products & Services, Operations and Communities – and contribute to Boeing’s global 2030 sustainability goals. Activities in 2022 include:

  • Launching Boeing’s Cascade Climate Impact Model at Farnborough Airshow, a dynamic modeling tool that analyses strategies and scenarios to reduce aviation's emissions.
  • Being part of a team led by Virgin Atlantic that secured government funding to operate the first 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) transatlantic flight
  • Becoming a founding member of the University of Sheffield’s Energy Innovation Centre (EIC) which provides Boeing access to the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Innovation Centre (SAF-IC) to help scale SAF production
  • Piloting two internship programmes in Boeing UK for participants with a disability
  • Launching the Newton Flight Academy with Glasgow Science Centre in Scotland, and a mobile Newton Room in Dublin, to engage young people with STEM through aviation-themed lessons

“I’m exceptionally proud of the progress we’ve made in our efforts to decarbonise aviation in the UK and Ireland, while continuing to make strides in building a diverse and inclusive workforce, as well as contributing to the communities in which we work through STEM outreach, charitable partnerships and volunteering,” said Maria Laine, Boeing’s President in the UK, Ireland and Nordics. “This spotlight demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the UK and Ireland, and the key role the region has to play in accelerating sustainable aviation.”

“In support of the UK government’s targets to cut aviation emissions to net zero by 2050, we are partnering with the Jet Zero Council, industry, not-for-profits and academia to scale up the local SAF industry and develop digital tools and services to improve operational efficiency,” said Steven Gillard, Boeing’s Regional Sustainability Director. “We know that tackling climate challenges faced by both civil aviation and armed forces and achieving a more sustainable aerospace industry is only possible when we come together.”
