Boeing awarded prestigious Gold Medal by the Air League

  • Industry recognition for more than a decade of support to leading UK aviation and aerospace charity.
  • Award recognises more than £1 million of charitable funding and dedicated resources to support Air League’s mission to promote aviation in the UK.

London,  June 15, 2023 - Boeing (NYSE:BA) has been named recipient of the Air League Gold Award, at the charity’s Annual Reception, held last night at the Palace of Westminster.

Accepting the award from Sir Christopher Harper KBE FRAeS, President of the Air League - for outstanding service to the causes of the Air League - was Maria Laine, Boeing President for the UK, Ireland & Nordic region

“We are immensely proud of our long and continued association with the Air League whose ethos of Changing Lives Through Aviation very much matches Boeing’s own priorities of improving youth engagement, increasing social mobility and supporting the veteran community.”

Over the course of the last decade, Boeing has donated more than £1 million to the Air League, facilitating bespoke programmes that further the shared aims of both organisations.

Boeing’s close-working with the Air League has supported veterans with physical or psychological disabilities who are transitioning back to civilian live. This includes supporting over 180 veterans through the Gliding to Solo and Battle Back Veteran Scholarship programmes, helping participants to build self-confidence whilst gaining new experiences and exploring opportunities within aviation and aerospace.

Boeing’s charitable donations have also funded programmes designed to help students from all backgrounds achieve their full potential, aimed at building a robust talent pipeline for the aerospace sector in the UK. This includes the funding of 330 aviation scholarships, breaking down educational and financial barriers for those who have the passion to succeed as an aviation professional.

Sir Christopher added, “As one of our most reliable, long-standing and generous benefactors, I am not exaggerating when I say that a considerable measure of the Air League’s success has hinged on Boeing’s support. Without it, schemes such as Battle Back, Gliding to Solo and the Air Cadet Build-a-Plane project would never have got off the ground. I am extremely grateful for all that Boeing does for the Air League and, by extension, the young people who benefit so gladly. Long may our very special relationship continue”.

Separately, a Framed Address was presented to Richard Pillans, Boeing UK Chief Test Pilot for his leadership of the Historic Army Aircraft Flight and their work in the field of STEM and encouraging young people into aviation, as well as his work at Boeing championing STEM and engaging young people with modern-day aircraft, notably the Chinook.
